About Global China Connection

Global China Connection is a leading organization for promoting cooperation between premier students in China and the international community. A student-run, nonpartisan, nonprofit funded by private and corporate donors, GCC leads over 50 international university chapters to meaningfully engage their counterparts in China.

In the past, GCC members have planned conferences in China focusing on corporate social responsibility; hosted visits to institutions like Google, Goldman Sachs, Caterpillar, Sidley Austin, Edelman, the U.S. Embassy in China, and dozens more; organized conferences with high level executives from the financial, public relations and law sectors; hosted delegations from Peking and Tsinghua Universities; and participated in exclusive internships at corporations like Lenovo.

GCC strives to provide students with the network and resources to achieve their global initiatives.  We work with professionals who provide guidance and ideas, as well as businesses that can provide funding and other valuable resources.  We strongly encourage all students to explore the potential that lies outside of their boundaries, and to take advantage of the opportunities that GCC has to offer them.

About GCC at UCSD

At UCSD's chapter of GCC, it is our mission to educate students about the opportunities that reside oversees in Asian countries, with an emphasis on those in China.  We stress the importance of future collaborations with China and the prospects that can be realized from both parties when open connections are preserved.

Our chapter operates on two major platforms; education and application.  Education about global opportunities in China will be addressed through various methods, including interactive panel discussions, lectures, and large-scale events. Accordingly, the application of global knowledge is accomplished by a wide spectrum of opportunities that we make available, including academic growth, professional development, community involvement, and global awareness.

About our Team

GCC at UCSD consists of four principal members.  Together we are the faces and ambassadors of the UCSD chapter, and strive to bring UCSD into a greater light in a professional, practical, and global sense.  We are:

President: Daphne Tan
Major: Economics
Minor: Chinese Studies and International Studies
Background: Delta Sigma Pi Professional Business Fraternity, Rec-N-Read, Marketing Assistant at the Guardian Newspaper
Why I chose GCC: After speaking with one of the leaders of GCC, I felt that UCSD is a campus in need of this organization and could truly benefit from having a chapter here. I recognize the growing importance of China and the need to become globally aware. Furthermore, GCC would provide the gap between theories and application for all majors. GCC at UCSD seeks to be an interest group for those who understanding the economic powers of China and are seeking opportunities to network. As president of GCC, I want to provide UCSD students with the opportunity to explore the world through the campus.

Vice President - External: Stephen Wu
Major: Chemical Engineering
Minors: Economics
Expected Graduation Date: 2013
Why I chose GCC: China is currently the fastest economically expanding country, offering limitless opportunities for the world. However, not a lot of people are aware of this pot of gold due to China's closed off history, therefore I am here to act as a liaison between these two parties. Being an international student straight out of China with a background of playing in the stock market for a couple years, I have a fair understanding of the current situation and I'm able to identify and make the connections that are necessary for success. Furthermore, being an international student, China is home and I wish to share this great culture and community to the world.

Vice President - Internal: Christina Kim
Major: International Studies - Poli Sci/Econ
Minors: History
Expected Graduation Date: 2013
Background: Rec-N-Read, Trend Magazine
Why I chose GCC: As an International Studies major, I am well aware of the rise of Asia’s economic and political capabilities. In addition, I recognize the increasing interaction of the global economic world. GCC creates a greater opportunities for college students like myself to be exposed and learn first-hand from other Asian universities how the global interactions will affect our futures.

Director of Administration: Kevin Ngo
Major: Management Science
Minor: Music
Expected Graduation Date: 2013
Why I chose GCC: Economist Jacques Martin once argued that although America oftentimes thinks of itself as a cosmopolitan nation, we are blissfully unaware of just how uncultured we truly are.  I believe that in order to progress, America must learn to more deeply immerse itself in the culture of other countries.  Both China and America have the limitless opportunity to gain knowledge and experience from each other, and as a management science major with an interest in finance, I believe that China is goldmine for students like myself.  I envision GCC to bring a wealth of opportunities to UCSD by opening up networks and resources for students to take a hold of their visions, thereby advancing both their future and the global effort for cooperation.
